Building Leaders

Since 1991, Leadership Las Cruces, a professional development program sponsored by the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce, has graduated hundreds of participants and expanded their leadership pursuits. Leadership Las Cruces offers robust classroom and field experiences for community-minded individuals who seek to enhance their leadership skills and improve our region.

Leadership Las Cruces graduates emerge from the eight month program better connected and equipped with a practical, in-depth understanding of major community issues, and become impassioned about solving them. The program links individuals to our community, opportunities, professional development, mentoring and the Chamber’s support network to help them start or expand their leadership.

Overview

The program begins with a two-day leadership skill-building retreat in March, in which participants gain and practice skills as they learn more about specific topics of community interest. Seven additional one-day sessions prepare Leadership Las Cruces participants to implement collaborative leadership skills in their businesses, boards and civic groups as well as their personal lives.

Class participants will have the opportunity to learn about the industries and organizations that make up the economic engine of the Mesilla Valley through presentations, field trips and hands-on experience in areas such as state and local government, health care, community topics, agriculture, education, military and aerospace.

Participation

Candidates for the Leadership Las Cruces program are selected from professional, educational, governmental, nonprofit and business sectors within the Las Cruces and Doña Ana County area. The class size for each year is limited to 28 participants. An individual must apply in order to participate in the program with support from their employer. The goal of the program is to find individuals who have an interest in becoming more involved with the community and are interested in becoming more effective leaders.

Leadership Orientation begins in March and then continues throughout the year on the third Friday of each month until graduation in November. Classes are generally held between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Tuition for the class is $1000 and includes all materials, meals and travel. Advance notice will be given of any additional expense. With the popularity of this program, payment must be received 20 days prior to the first session to ensure confirmation as a participant. Failure to pay by the deadline will open the position to the next applicant. Due to advance planning requirements of the program, no refunds will be given after the first program day.

“Whether you have been here three months or 30 years, I guarantee you will learn something you did not know about this amazing place we live and work.” Rob Richardson, Bohannan Huston, Inc.

Leadership Las Cruces Alumni

One of the benefits of being a part of the Leadership Las Cruces program is that it then puts you in a special group of over 300 community leaders, leaders with the common bond of an intimate knowledge of our community that spans more than 25 years and a passion to lead.

Alumni members are encouraged to participate in each year’s new class orientation and then return to share in the class graduation at the end of the program.
