A change in balance can lead to job loss in the area

There is a balance between big businesses and small businesses.
There is New Mexico State University, which just announced it is moving forward with a new medical school, and a number of locally owned businesses that have been here for a long time, some for multiple generations.

By the time this year comes to a close, we should see more than 1,000 new jobs generated in our area – most of which pay well over the state’s current minimum wage of $7.50 per hour. These jobs span different industries – from business services and manufacturing to advanced food processing. These jobs require different skills and skill levels. All of these jobs are in the private sector. The Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce does a terrific job of providing networking opportunities.
With more than 50 events each year, there is always a chance to meet your next customer or make sure that you stay in touch with a current client. Networking is truly one of the linchpins of the Chamber’s program of work.

Every year as we begin a new Junior Leadership program, we get an opportunity to meet future leaders of our community.
This year we have 29 juniors representing every high school in Las Cruces. After spending nearly an entire day with them during their orientation session, I think that we will have a terrific class of students who will engage in the process, learn a great deal and improve their leadership skills.
