As part of our ongoing service to our members, the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce keeps you up-to-date on laws or actions being proposed that could have a serious impact on employers and the job climate in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County.
The Chamber has always favored protecting the Organ Mountains, but based on concerns that have not been addressed we are in opposition to the over-reaching S. 1805 Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks Conservation Act which will sequester 25% of Doña Ana County’s lands under a permanent, non-reversible monument status. Additionally, much of the land proposed for the monument is already protected as Wilderness Study areas.
There is an alternative bill that protects just the Organ Mountains without tying down so much of our public lands in a restrictive way that will impact our economy and future, H.R. 995.
Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell is coming to Las Cruces tomorrow, Friday, January 24th to hear from Las Cruces business owners and the public on these proposed bills to protect the Organ Mountains and other key areas in our county. Alarmingly, supporters of S. 1805 Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks Conservation Act have organized bus loads of people from other cities, counties and even states to be at this meeting to voice support of locking down our public lands.
Don’t let outsiders speak for you the business community on this issue!
PEASE ATTEND THE MEETING and let Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell and Senators Tom Udall & Martin Heinrich know where you stand on this issue and to consider a reasonable alternative to protect the Organ Mountains at an important public meeting to be held:
