The Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce will host its first annual Medical Update Luncheon sponsored by Comcast from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Ramada Palms de Las Cruces, 201 E. University Ave.

The event will feature a panel of speakers headed by Dr. Alfredo Vigil, secretary of the New Mexico Department of Health. Other speakers include Donna Brown, executive director of Mesilla Valley Hospice; Paul Herzog, CEO of Memorial Medical Center; and Denten Park, CEO of MountainView Regional Medical Center.

Vigil will address the key health issues affecting New Mexico as well as some of the looming issues of health care reform and its impact on the state. He has 30 years of extensive clinical and management experience specializing in family medicine, geriatrics, emergency medicine and reproductive health issues. He has worked in private practice, community health centers, hospitals and other nonprofit organizations. For the past five years, he was chief executive officer of El Centro Family Health, a nonprofit primary care organization in Española.

Gov. Bill Richardson appointed Vigil in June 2007 to serve as secretary of the New Mexico Department of Health, the largest state agency. The Department of Health works with New Mexicans to prevent disease, prepare for health emergencies, promote sound health policy, protect vulnerable individuals and provide support and advocacy to individuals with disability.

The Chamber's Medical Update Luncheon will be part of a new series of "Update Luncheons" to be hosted by the Chamber this year. The series will include topics focusing on Education, Spaceport America, the City and County, the State, and the Military.

According to Chamber President/CEO Jim Berry, the new programs are a great addition to Chamber Members already extensive benefits. "We hope to touch on important topics and how they affect us on many different levels, not just as individuals or as business owners, but our overall community and beyond," he said.

The Medical Update Luncheon is sponsored by Comcast, Memorial Medical Center, Good Samaritan Society-Las Cruces Village and MountainView Regional Medical Center. Other sponsorship opportunities are still available for the event.
