Doña Ana County commissioners will have a first-reading tomorrow, Tuesday February 10th, of a proposal to raise gross receipts tax rates countywide. This would be after voters voted down a tax increase for public transit last November and two other increases before that. However, this increase will not go before the voters, it will be decided by our county commissioners.  Gross receipts tax within the city coupled with this new county tax could mean as much as 3/4% in additional taxes for 2015 or approximately $24 million. As part of our ongoing service to our members, the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce keeps you up-to-date on laws or actions being proposed that could have a serious impact on employers and the job climate in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County.

The Chamber has always favored protecting the Organ Mountains, but based on concerns that have not been addressed we are in opposition to the over-reaching S. 1805 Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks Conservation Act which will sequester 25% of Doña Ana County’s lands under a permanent, non-reversible monument status.
