I am honored to write my first Bottom Line column as 2014 board chairman for the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce.
We are so fortunate to have had such positive leadership from outgoing Chair Leslie Cervantes and those who have paved the way before her. Her skills across many areas, as well as the staff ’s dedication, have helped the Chamber to be the important influence it is today in local and regional policy-making.
As an owner of a small business, I understand the hurdles we in business must face just to keep our doors open. My focus will be to continue to advocate for business, help grow our community’s economic base and increase the standard of living. My great-great grandfather, Jose Lucero, and his brother, Felipe, were pioneer sheriffs in Doña Ana County, and before them, their family included freighters and businessmen. As it was for them, my passion for the betterment of this region goes very deep. This is the place I have chosen to live, raise my family and grow my business.
2014 will see the renovation of the Chamber’s new home, the Armijo House on Lohman Avenue, showing our commitment to the preservation of the history of the community. Nester Armijo was a prominent businessman in his day, and we think it is fitting to make his home the headquarters of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce.
Our commitment to the future is shown in our dedication to the mission of White Sands Missile Range, support of Spaceport America and close connections with New Mexico State University.
The Chamber is made up of businesses large and small, which gives us a strong collective voice when faced with issues that may harm the long-term economic health of our region. The continued growth of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce is testimony to the service and value we provide to our membership. I encourage our members to join in the discussion as issues arise, and those that are not yet members, to join us as we continue to improve our community.
Mike Beckett, Chair of the Board Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce
