Group raises money for breast cancer research

Mission: NMSU Aggies are Tough Enough to Wear Pink is a volunteer group raising breast cancer awareness and funds on behalf of Cowboys for Cancer Research, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation in Las Cruces, New The Pink Panther cheers as the 2014 NMSU Aggies Are Tough Enough to Wear Pink committee announced fully funding a $1.5 million breast cancer research endowment.Mexico.

Purpose: We lead a diverse group of community leaders, business owners and dedicated volunteers who work collaboratively with New Mexico State University administration and athletics to organize community events and an annual NMSU NCAA football game. Through a series of fundraising efforts and events, we generate cash and in-kind contributions that we proudly present to our partners, Cowboys for Cancer Research.

Key Goals: Raising breast cancer awareness in Las Cruces and southern New Mexico and funds for breast cancer research.

History: “Are You Tough Enough to Wear Pink?” was first asked at the 2006 Wrangler National Rodeo Finals.

Participants and sponsors were challenged to raise money for breast cancer research and a $1 million check was presented to Tough Enough to Wear Pink founder Terry Wheatley. With this inspiration in 2007, Las Cruces breast cancer survivors Pat Sisbarro, Magellia Boston, June Mumme and Laura Conniff collaborated with New Mexico State University administration and athletics to create a college football version of the rodeo event at NMSU. They convinced administrators to dedicate an Aggie football game to breast cancer awareness then challenged Las Cruces business leaders, citizens and civic groups to raise money and wear pink to the game. Since then, more than $3.5 million (cash and in-kind services) has been raised, a $1.5 million endowment has been established at the NMSU Foundation and “NMSU Aggies Are Tough Enough to Wear Pink” has become the largest event of its kind in the world!
